Scott Johns W3TX was first licensed in 1980 at the age of 14. As a teenager his primary avocation was Dxing and Contesting using a tribander at 50ft and wires on 40 and 80 meters. In 1986 the guy wires of his 50ft tower were cut by vandals on Halloween night: Amidst the fallen wreckage of his antenna system he declared he would build a tower that was vandal resistant and perfect for Dxing and Contesting.
For over 20 years Scott has been involved in applying his Bertha wisdom and experience to re-popularize Berthas with the amateur radio fraternity. He has lectured at the Dayton Hamvention Antenna Forum on the subject of Bertha monopoles. And he has helped people realize their dream of building and using Berthas.
Scott is a 1988 graduate of Allegheny College (BS Biology) and a 1992 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (VMD). He practices cat and dog medicine, surgery, dentistry and ultrasound at Fairview Veterinary Hospital near Erie PA. Scott’s favorite mode is CW, and he is currently working on a project to remote control his Bertha system via the internet.
